about
On February 17th, 2012 (3 days after the Russian Wilds was released) we played Santa Barbara at Soho with the Allah-Las and Neal Casal solo. Neal gave a beautiful solo performance that night, I believe on solo electric, playing a lot of songs from his then most recent solo album 'Sweeten the Distance' and then sat in with Howlin Rain for this extended version of Calling Lightning pt 2.
It's a joy to hear Neal, Isaiah and Joel (on keys) trading off burning, colorful leads. I believe the first solo section in the song is Neal, the beginning guitar solo of the extended ending jam is Isaiah and Neal takes over from the breakdown in the jam section about half way through the song on out. The recording is pretty bootleg quality but I always loved this one.
I thought we'd have more of these Neal. I loved being on stage with you, I think everyone who shared a stage with you did.
RIP friend.

Now to spin this and take flight.
As a former card carrying member of jamband scene this would have fit nicely back in the late 60's-70's and the late 90's-00's when improvisational jams were king.
This is going to take the scene into another direction with Garcia Peoples.
Vinyl Purchased 10/3/20.

My favorite track is Kasey's Bones, because of Neal's reaction to Dan's wrong note. It is so obvious to people who know Neal that the yelling was so tongue in cheek. "It's been going on for years!" :) I've met them in person several times, and they are the best. I miss Neal everyday, but I am so happy to get even more music from these recordings. Split Pea is amazingly bluesy and Viola Steez is so funky. I also feel like the bass is louder in the mix on this album and I like that very much! dekraut
